Introspection was my second painting using oil stick. All the smudging and blending was done with my fingers, as I had not yet discovered brushes. The idea here is a conceptual one. I see the painting as an abstracted profile of a persons head. Two eyes are recognizable. One eye, on the left, looks to the physical, outside world. The physical world is expressed by the shapes to the left of the eye. To the right of the eye is the movie screen in our mind, where we see, imagine, and remember. The eye on the right represents that part of our awareness that does not look outward, but looks inward; the part of us that is introspective.
