In one sense, this painting is a metaphor for revelation. The "ladder" is a passage, revealed in glimpses within our awareness. Sometimes there are moments, as when an unexpected beam of sunlight is born, when something inside us is refreshed and relieved, filled with knowing and joy. These moments are magical in that we are elevated to the perception of a broader awareness of Being. . When we have these experiences we have not only found the ladder; it has found us, if but only briefly.
In another sense, the ladder is the vehicle of basic awareness and perception of things in everyday life. We climb our ladders from one thing to another, from one state of mind to another. Sometimes we climb down into places where getting out seems impossible. However, we can always climb out because it is in our power of choice to do so. Our ability to decide who we want to be and what we want to experience is our empowerment. Our every action and intention is a movement along our ladder. Which direction we go is up to us.
